The Muslim World Declares East Jerusalem the Palestinian Capital Muslim leaders of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) declared the recognition of East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine on Wednesday (13/12) (AFP PHOTO / YASIN AKGUL) Leaders of Muslim countries joined in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) declared the recognition of East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine, Wednesday (13/12). The recognition is a form of assertiveness of the Muslim world in rejecting the steps of the President of the United States who called Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on Wednesday (6/12) last week. The Istanbul Declaration or "Jerusalem Liberation" was announced Wednesday after an extraordinary summit attended by OIC heads of state, including Indonesian President Joko Widodo in Istanbul, Turkey. "We ensure that we recognize the Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as the capital, and we call on the whole world to recognize East Jerusalem as the colonized Palestinian capital," the Istanbul Declaration announced as quoted by Turkish news agency Anadolu on Wednesday (13 / 12) The declaration also denounced and condemned the unlawful "US President Donald Trump" decision. "(Trump's decision about Jerusalem) is void and void based on history, law and conscience," the Istanbul Declaration said. "We ask the United Nations, the European Union and the international community to keep the UN Resolution on the status of Jerusalem." The leaders of the Muslim world through the declaration also urged Trump to withdraw its decision. The OIC was formed at a summit of Muslim state leaders in Rabat, Morocco in 1969, after the burning of Al Aqssa Mosque, Jerusalem.
